Venice After Dark

Venice: San Marco Basilica... in the dark!

As a part of the Swiss Architectural Award, sponsored in Venice by BSI, the Swiss bank based in Lugano, the itinerary included a singular event: a visit to the San Marco Basilica at night.

My tour began at 9:00 pm after the doors were closed to tourists and worshippers. Once inside, the lights were turned completely off, and for a few minutes there was awestruck silence. Then, slowly, gradually, the lights were turned on in different parts of the church, revealing the brilliant gold mosaics overhead. In addition, the Pala d'Oro, the priceless jewel-encrusted altar screen, was turned around to face us, something that is rarely done. The trip concluded with a visit to the underground crypt, a seldom-seen area where intimate weddings are sometimes held.

An unusual visit, a great privilege, never to be forgotten.
