Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl is a moving and sensitive portrayal of a couple deeply in love and willing to make extreme sacrifices for their union. The true story of a Danish artist and her husband, who, after standing in as a female model, uncovered a starting inner truth.

The subject of transgender individuals has made huge strides in the last decade, but imagine the anguish in the early 20th century for an upper middle class Danish couple living in Paris.

Eddie Redmayne has a face that invites long stares, and this film lingers over his delicate features, both as a man and as a woman. Alicia Vikander as his wife Gerda shows her suffering and it literally spills out of the screen.

It was a moving and thought provoking film taking on what was, at the time, a very unusual subject. On my trip to Copenhagen, about six months after the film, moments of the production kept returning as  flashbacks, and I have some extremely sweet memories tied to this film and to my visit.

I prefer to keep them to myself, but I will never forget them.
