Welcome to the birthplace of Eau de Cologne.

Let yourself be swept away into the wonderful world of perfumes with a tour through the Cologne Fragrance Museum and the 4711 Perfume house. In these 2 museums you'll discover three centuries of fragrance and cultural history, starting with perfumer Johann Maria Farina (1685-1766) who created the first fragrant water and called it "Eau de Cologne" - honouring his new home city. You can visit the fragrance museum of this family-run business where visitors are drawn into the history of Eau de Cologne at the Farina Museum. You'll see original flacons, paintings and art objects that testify to the fascinating history of the original Eau de Cologne with a tour hosted by "the perfumer Farina" clad in a Rococo costume, who reveals the secrets of the fragrance.

The Glockengasse - House of 4711

The Glockengasse in Cologne and the traditional house with the famous carillon are inseparably linked with the fragrance 4711 Original Eau de Cologne. This iconic location is the perfect setting to present the brand and its rich heritage. It comprises a spacious flagship store, with a tempting array of 4711 products, and a modern event centre dedicated to perfume, beauty and sensuality. Regular perfume seminars are held here, where participants are invited to try their hand at blending their own perfume.

It was here, in 1792, in the heart of Cologne, that the world-famous classic fragrance 4711 Original Eau de Cologne was first made. From here, its popularity spread all around the globe, earning 4711 a place in history as one of the world’s most famous scents.

The name 4711 comes from 1794 when the City Council of Cologne decided to number the housing blocks before the French occupation. The glockenspiel chimes on the hour, every hour from 9am to 7pm and plays the tune of the Marseillaise, the French National Anthem.

The unique fragrance composition is still a closely guarded secret – learn more about what makes 4711 Original Eau de Cologne so special, and what its effects are!
