About Wigwam Motel California
Original Route 66 Wigwam motel
An update on the traditional Indian habitat of a wigwam, but in concrete, these 19 motel units near San Bernadino in California date from the early 1950’s. Now recognised on the US register of historic monuments, they are part of a chain created in 1935 by Frank A. Redford. The first design in Kentucky was patented in 1936 by Frank, and the Wigwam Motel grew with one of the first franchises to include 6 properties across the USA following historic route 66. Only 3 remain in use today, San Bernardino was the last to be created - and one of the best preserved.
The wigwams were repainted and refurbished when the current owners took them over in 2003. Manny and the team are passionate about their history and that of Route 66. It is worth asking him for stories as he is continually uncovering their past. Even though you’re sleeping in a wigwam, they offer the same modern amenities of air conditioning, cable TV, private bathrooms with shower etc. that you’d expect of a more traditional motel, just in a teepee format.
Map & Activities
Address wise, the postal address is in Rialto, but you’re located much more in adjacent San Bernardino so should consider that as your centre if seeking directions.

There isn’t a restaurant on site, but you’re located on the highway, so aren’t far from the restaurants of Rialto, or San Bernardino and Fontana a little over 4 miles away. Fontana is the site of the California raceway, one of the NASCAR series oval racecar circuits and San Bernardino home to the original McDonalds hamburger stand - birthplace of fast food, now housing a museum of hamburger history.
