Festival of Masts

Posted By ErickPrillwitz on May 28, 2013 at 4:22AM

One of the most colourful festivals in Portugal, right here in Sao Teotonio during the month of June is the Festival of Masts (Festival dos Mastros).

This community event that takes place every two years in the town of S. Teotónio. The streets are decorated with paper flowers of a thousand colours, in a joint initiative between residents, local associations, the parish and municipality.

Preparations start months earlier over many nights working and socializing, in which groups of residents are mobilized to transform their place, their neighbourhood and their street, into the most beautiful of all. Afterwards there is almost an entire month of festivities, usually in June, where every night there is a dance in a different neighbourhood. At the centre of the festival there is always a “mast”, decorated with arbutus branches, real and paper flowers, evoking ancient times in which offerings were made for a successful harvest, the curing of a disease or such like.  As a thank you, the family or the neighbourhood, would erect a mast and invited the people to dance, sing and celebrate around it.
