The Henry Jones Art Hotel excels.
The building dates back to 1825 but the real story begins with a young boy called Henry Jones, born in Hobart in 1862. At the age of 12, Henry began work in George Peacock’s jam factory pasting labels on jam tins 6 days a week, 10 hours a day.
Henry grew up to be an Australian industry icon, an entrepreneur with business interests spanning five continents including jam manufacture, fruit, timber, mining, and shipping. His success was epitomised by Henry Jones & Co’s most famous jam brand, IXL, the label of which was derived from Henry’s quote: “I excel in all the products I make”.
It still applies today with the award-winning, five-star, boutique Henry Jones Art Hotel, a luxurious fusion of history, colonial architecture and modern art space on Hobart’s waterfront, housed in the functional, stately frame of the old IXL jam factory.
The Henry Jones has modern appeal mixed with minimalist industrial style, offset by unexpected combinations of objects, sculptures, art and furniture. It’s upmarket, comfortable, relaxed, and pretty funky... in an industrial kind of way.
It’s the flashest factory you will ever sleep in.
