“It is businesses as usual for Unusual” quipped co-founder of this guide to over 130 Unusual properties, Steve Dobson. “We’ve always been keen to do something different and buck the boring. Facing off against more established ideas is something we enjoy doing”.

“Membership of the online guide is restricted to properties that can demonstrate that they are unusual in themselves, not just extreme in their tariffs” highlights Steve.

About the Worldwide Hospitality Awards

Since 1999, MKG Group and HTR Magazine, have managed the awards to recognise and reward best practices and initiatives, innovations and unique characteristics of hotels and hoteliers. This year, the Jury is presided by Clara Gaymard, president of General Electric France and winners were announced at the ceremony in Paris.

Highlighting the online guide theme of ‘hotels and books with a twist’ the logo will be rolled out to all the different sites in early 2008.

Many people have helped with ideas for the logo and Steve and Simon would particularly like to thank Matt Weston of UK business community Business Bricks for his help in the design competition that highlighted so many ideas. After several great concepts it was Sam Styles of Styles design who finally came up with the graphics that encapsulated what The Unusual Company do. His efforts and those of the Iniquus design team headed by Vikram Raghuvanshi have provided a logo that the whole team is excited about.

Visit report Baumhaus Hotel Germany Baumhaus Hotel Germany

Steve was on his travels again and recently spent the night in Germany’s first tree house resort, near the town of Gorlitz, close to Dresden.

Unlike many tree houses that are often converted sheds reached by rope ladders this mini-village of 5 tree houses are connected by sturdy walkways. TUV certified, the complete tree house complex is designed to be safe even for small children. With a next-door adventure playground featuring over 500m of interconnected tunnels underground this is no ordinary destination.

Designed and built by owner Jürgen Bergmann and his team of children's adventure playground architects and builders it is incredible to see such creativity for real.

Tree House HotelSome tree houses have small balconies and each tree house is themed according to the regional tradition and myths of trolls and fairy folk. Steve stayed in the button-loving-fairy Fiona’s house, and all are impressively fun to stay in.

The adventure park also hosts a number of folk festivals, the largest attracting crowds of up to 10,000 revellers over the party weekend. For immediate information to share with friends, check out details in the book – or be patient and look at it online over the next month!
