Rooms themed around Guardian Angels
Opened in 1999, Monte Chora Cascas has established itself as one of Portugal’s most highly regarded Casas de Campo, or country homes open to guests.
Just one hour’s drive from Lisbon, the Monte offers easy access to the luminous beauty of the Alentejo region. The house, with six individually decorated double rooms, lies on a gently rounded ridge overlooking a valley of olive and cork groves, with the hilltop castle of Montemor-o-Novo on the horizon.
In 2011 Monte Chora Cascas was completely redecorated and its service concept extended to include a number of new offerings in interior design, gastronomy and art. Some of these, known collectively as Chora Cascas Choice, are available exclusively at the Monte.
Over the years, Monte Chora Cascas has cultivated a style of hospitality that combines informality with attentiveness, while respecting guests’ privacy. They have decided to take this approach one step further by creating the Monte Exclusivo reservation, which allows a group of guests to discover the full magic of Monte Chora Cascas by having it all to themselves.
To enjoy this earthly paradise is to realise that heaven can wait…
Monte Chora Cascas have named their six rooms after guardian angels, the initials of which form the word “sonhar”, meaning “to dream” in Portuguese.
Each room is individually furnished and features specially selected bed linen, dressing gowns, towels and slippers from ARTE PURA, an Italian brand exclusively available in Portugal through Chora Cascas Choice.
The choice of colours, artworks and furniture defines the character and emotional ambience of each room. Works by represented artists and designers are available for purchase through Chora Cascas Choice.
Sitael, protector of idealism and magnanimity.
Omael, protector of vigour and plenitude.
Nithael, protector of beauty and trust.
Haziel, protector of love and reconciliation.
Aniel, protector of fortitude and honesty.
Rochel, protector of unity and sagacity.
Breakfast is included in the room rate and is served in Club CC between 8.30 and 11.30.
Club CC is Monte Chora Cascas’ culinary annex, with a large breakfast/dining room and an open kitchen. Its covered terrace has a view of Montemor-o-Novo’s hilltop castle and the surrounding countryside.
For reasons of scale and concept, use of the Club’s kitchen as well as catering arrangements are limited to Monte Exclusivo guests.
Honesty Bar & Petiscos
This specially designed bar and kitchen in the main house has drinks as well as a selection of delicious snacks and simple meals. In the interests of guests’ autonomy and of promoting mutual trust, the Bar&Petiscos is always open and functions on a self-service principle. This means that guests are responsible for noting down what they eat and drink, to be confirmed and paid for when they check out.
The wide open landscapes of the Alentejo beckon every lover of the outdoors. Explore them on foot, by bicycle, on horseback – or from the basket of a hot-air balloon. The Concierge can help you with each of these options.
The municipality of Montemor-o-Novo has turned a disused local railway line into a bicycle and walking trail, the Ecopista do Montado. It offers perhaps the easiest way of experiencing the nature of the Alentejo, and the Concierge can organise bicycle rentals or horses (with a guide) for an outing among cork oaks and olive trees.
For those who seek another kind of exhilaration, floating above the landscape in a hot-air balloon affords unforgettable views. The Concierge works with a reputable ballooning company that pioneered the activity in Portugal and follows the strictest safety regulations.
The food and wine of the Alentejo merit special attention. The Concierge can arrange tasting events at the Monte on themes such as cheese and wine, air-cured ham and smoked meats, olive oil and herbs, Portuguese grape varieties – or on a theme suggested by the guest.
Tastings can also be arranged elsewhere, in connection with visits to wineries and farms.
Last but not least, the Concierge is always happy to recommend restaurants to suit guests’ preferences and appetites
