About La Claustra
Sleep luxuriously in an underground cavern
Once a secret military installation deep inside the St Gotthard mountain, this former fort has been transformed into an out-of-the ordinary seminar centre and hotel. When the Swiss army gave up their Alpine fortifications in 1999, artist Jean Odermatt saw the opportunity and created the Fondazione La Claustra. Opening in 2004, La Claustra is hewn deep into the rock and provides both hotel, conference centre and creative laboratory situated among some of the most stunning scenery with views of the rooftop of Europe.
Food gets the gastronomic touch here with ‘Tavolata’ weekend events, blending culinary delights and food for thought, combining guest speakers from the region with a five course dinner. Although bed and breakfast packages are available, most guests consider half or full board packages as there aren’t many facilities nearby for dining, although picnics can be provided on request.

Each of the 17 rooms is embedded deep inside the mountain and provides
simple tranquil settings for quiet reflection. En-suite bathroom
facilities are fed directly by the 5 sources of water that are harnessed
within the St Gotthard region, which provide 7% of Europe’s drinking
water. La Claustra also provides a Wellness Oasis spa fed direct from
the water springs, with a steam bath in a unique glass cube, bordered by
reflection Kusatso-pools for relaxation.
A number of meeting
rooms and common spaces have been provided in the caverns of this
underground property, including hi-tech conference rooms which are in
demand during the summer months for company events and workshops.
There are 17
bedrooms and daily rates per person are from around 245 Swiss Francs CHF (US$210
/ €170) based on a Bed and Breakfast basis including VAT and taxes. Half board
options are available. Packages including the ‘Tavolata’ on selected weekend
days including the well-being spa area are around 495CHF (US$430 / €345) per
person.

halfway between Zurich and Milan and reached by car
or public transport in around 2 hours. Due to its altitude and the guarantee of
winter snow it is only open between May and October and advance reservations are
essential.

is very much a retreat location for consideration and reflection in unique
natural surroundings. Outside of the hotel there are numerous trails and hiking
tours available for the more adventurous and on request guides and additional
activities can be organized.
