Overview

About Controversy Tram Hotel

City trams and railcar converted into 5 B+B rooms.

Frank and Irma Appel have restored a 4-berth train carriage and 4 wonderfully themed tram bedrooms in either end of 2 city centre tram railcars, that used to run on the streets of Amsterdam and Germany. With double bed, shower and toilet facilities and a sink top unit for drinks and snacks, these represent a fantastic Bed and Breakfast location.

Next to the carriage is the Appel house, Controversy - named after their love of the similarly titled Prince album. You can’t help but join in the lifestyle that Frank and Irma have created! They themselves sleep inside a London Double Decker bus, installed in the living room, and their kitchen and breakfast area is a converted French van. Their house is decorated with cars, and motor paraphernalia.

Outside the house, there is also a Mig fighter plane – providing a completely surreal view of the property from the surrounding flat land around Hoogwoud."

This place is fantastic and well worth the visit. Frank and Irma are very hospitable, nothing is too much trouble and the breakfast platter they leave is excellent. My 2 sons, who are 13 and 11 loved it so much they didn't want to leave the tram for the entire weekend! A truly fantastic place, hosted by very lovely people.

Returned in June 2012 - to another fantastic reception from Frank and Irma. The railcar is as fantastic as ever. The kids actually had to be woken up - so happy were they in their beds. Next year we'll stay for the week!

Fantastic place. Took my 6 and 8 year old children who still consider this one of the best places they've EVER stayed. Frank and Irma were great hosts. We stayed in the railway carriage with a jacuzzi at one end. Warm, cosy and huge fun. The breakfast platter was enormous. Fresh coffee. Everything faultless.
