For Lisbon biologist owners Ana and António, their dream of a luxury lifestyle needed to be something a bit different.

The 6 double rooms and suite of Casa da Cisterna are all named after local birds and very comfortable. Decorated differently, they reflect the personal taste of the owners, making you feel immediately at home. Light colours and cosy decorations used throughout rooms and common areas give a sense of comfort and simplicity.

Beautifully restored across a number of terrace levels, the house has a small garden on the top, where sun loungers are ideally situated for sunny weather. Garden rooms are quieter and a good option in colder months, having the warmth of an individual fireplace. The uppermost terrace has the plunge pool, where you’re surrounded by a fantastic view across the roofs of the village every evening.

Casa da Cisterna is located in a very interesting region, rich in landscape, history and nature. Nearby are other Historical Villages like Almeida, Castelo Mendo, Marialva, Trancoso; and also the Douro Internacional Natural Park and its great landscapes.

While there is only a small terrace in Casa da Cisterna, with pool and stunning South facing views, the real backyard is the village itself. Full of interesting things to see, from the soft light of the early morning, to the floodlights illuminating the ruins of the castle, every doorway is filled with character.

How to get there

Coming from

Lisbon, take the A1 motorway towards Torres Novasand then, the A23 to Guarda.

Porto, take the A1 to Albergaria-a-Velhaand then, take the A25 to Vilar Formoso.

At Guarda, drive on for about 20 kms until you reach exit 32 and follow the signs to Almeida and then to Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. About 1 km before Figueira, you'll find an indication to Castelo Rodrigo on your right, which you should take. Once you get to the village you'll find a roundabout. Turn right and then left. You will be on Rua da Cadeia. Casa da Cisterna is at the end of the street, on your right.
