Overview

About Breakwater Lodge

Former Cape Town prison, now converted to good value accommodation as part of the Business School.

Breakwater Lodge, a prison dating from 1901, has been refurbished to offer affordable hotel accommodation as part of the University of Cape Town business school. Originally housing 352 prisoners and based on the design of Pentonville and Millbank prison in England, it now provides guests with a historic home in the heart of Cape Town within easy reach of the main routes to beaches, mountain walks and city “hot spots”.

Operated by Protea Hotels, Breakwater Lodge is perfectly positioned in the heart of Cape Town’s Waterfront Development. There is easy access to a wide variety of restaurants, pubs, shops and entertainment facilities.

Value and position are very good. Situation is ideal, especially for tourists taking advantage of the V&A Waterfront facilities and access to Robben Island. Tariff is very reasonable, but guests need to be aware that rooms vary in the facilities provided - some are pretty basic, without air-conditioning (which can be a real problem in summer, especially where the windows don't open). Staff are very friendly and helpful, but bear in mind that BreakWater is primarily accommodation for Business School (postgraduate) students attending courses, rather than a hotel.
