The building itself is a residential palais from 1825, which like so many old properties in the former GDR, had fallen into disrepair.
The efforts of an enterprising group of young artists in 1984, transitioned the property from a dilapidated art studio into a boutique hotel. In 2003 an annex was added to enclose the courtyard. This addition, as well as overall refurbishment and fitting of double glazing has at last blocked the noise of the nearby elevated S-Bahn. Previously, ear plugs were a necessary addition to pyjamas for guests. While the classical style of the main building has been maintained, the new addition is more in tune with urban art, using exposed concrete, steel and glass. This serves to highlight the artistic nature of the different rooms and provides a gallery space for regular exhibitions is provided next to the lobby.
