Art Hotel in Sicily, with every room a work of art
The Hotel Atelier sul Mare, in Castel di Tusa, is a living showcase for international artists. Not only have rooms been handed over to the artists to be transformed into works of art, they are designed to include the hotel guest as part of the creation.
The predominant theme is water – and the sea is just outside the hotel to be exact. Different artists use this inspiration in different ways – from ‘Power’ (by Maurizio Marchetti), ‘Absorbing Nest’ (by Paolo Icaro), the minimalist ‘Mystery for the Moon’ (by Hidetoshi Nagasawa) or the reflective ‘Denial of the Sea’ (by Fabrizio Plessi).
20 of the hotels 40 rooms have been turned into Art rooms and guests are encouraged to change to a different art-room each night to get the fullest experience. Of course, how full your experience depends upon your personal view of art. Often minimalist in their furnishings (and hanging space), these rooms are certainly unusual – and none detract from the stunning view of the beautiful sea outside your window.

Art room prices vary according to season. Double rooms are from €70 per person, per night to €105 each in high season on a bed and breakfast basis.
Half Board and Full board packages are also available, as are standard rooms with or without a sea view.
With 40 bedrooms in total, Atelier sul Mare also offers something for those that aren’t aficionados of art. Courses range from pottery making to Sicilian wine and cuisine to classical music recitals.
Equally, if you feel you’re about to overdose on modern art, check into one of the normal rooms – or just look out across the bay and take in the view.

Map & Activities
The hotel is situated in Castel di Tusa, a quiet little village near Cefalù (15KM) and S.Stefano di Camastra (9KM), in the Messina province on the northern coast of Sicily. It is located halfway between Palermo and Messina.
Activities
If you're not troubled by vertiginous mountain roads, a walk around the Fiumara d’Arte sculpture park is highly recommended. Also created by Antonio Presti, it consists of a dozen or so artworks exhibited in the open air along a (long) mountain track. Allow a whole day for the trip. A map is available at hotel reception. If you're looking for something quieter, the celebrated and magnificent cathedral in the nearby town of Cefalù should be seen. The square in front of the cathedral is ideal for a snack or drink.
